Bangal and Cinco in Thailand for CEB making
Dominic Bangal, IHHELPP representative in the Philippines and Benjamin Cinco, recipient of the first disaster-proof home in Tacloban, travelled to Thailand for a week-long training on making compressed earth blocks (CEBs).
Bangal stated, “It was a new yet enriching experience for us. We learned valuable principles and skills on creating compressed earth blocks. We toured around Bangkok visiting buildings and establishments made from CEBs. We also visited homes that were rebuild using CEBs previously destroyed by the 2004 tsunami.”
Dominic Bangal and Benjamin Cinco received hands-on training on how to set-up and operate CEB machines from professional manufacturers. They in turn will conduct trainings and workshops for IHHELPP members in the Philippines. Bangla added, “These compressed earth blocks are less expensive than the regular hollow blocks. This means that we can build homes at a lower cost. This will benefit the poor in the Philippines. Plus, it is eco-friendly as we only need soil and concrete, not wood.”
CEB FAQ’s
Compressed earth blocks can be made by mixing soil, which is free and comprises 95% of the main ingredient, with 5% cement. HHELPP has recently purchased 4 CEB machines for its livelihood program in the Philippines.
